Your Questions About Petroleum Engineering Colleges Ranking

Sandra asks…

best colleges for engineering major?

hi, does anyone know where to find the college ranks for the majors: petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, and computer engineering (or just engineering in general)?

Brad Perry answers:

According to USNews, which does college rankings every year, here are the rankings for engineering in general:

For universities with doctoral programs:
Rank/School Peer
assessment
score
( 5.0 = highest)
1. Massachusetts Inst. Of Technology 4.9
2. Stanford University (CA) 4.7
2. University of California–Berkeley * 4.7

For schools without doctoral programs:
Rank/School Peer
assessment
score
( 5.0 = highest)
1. Harvey Mudd College (CA) 4.5
1. Rose-Hulman Inst. Of Tech. (IN) 4.5
3. Cooper Union (NY) 4.2
4. Cal Poly–San Luis Obispo * 4.0

However, I don’t think any of these will apply to petroleum engineering at the bachelor’s level. Stanford only offers it at the graduate level. Off the top of my head, some of the top petroleum engineering schools are UT Austin, Texas A&M, U of Oklahoma, U of Tulsa…

Check out the link below to see more details about particular majors.

Maria asks…

Should I go to University of Tulsa or University of Oklahoma for petroleum engineering?

Tulsa University is more selective and is private and Oklahoma University is a state school. It seems like Tulsa University would be really good for me because I would like to go to a small school (I mainly don’t want to see people from my high school in college) and its twenty miles from my house, but OU’s petroleum engineering program is usually ranked higher in polls (OU is usually 4 or 5 and TU is 7 or 8). Does this ranking matter very much? Both Schools have very good programs from what I understand. Could it affect my job search after high school?

It's easy to dismiss college rankings, but not so easy to offer an alternative to overworked parents and overwhelmed students, many of whom do not have nor can they afford the services of a college counselor to help them explore alternatives. In the end, it's not the college name on your diploma that matters, it's what the student does with her experience both in and after college that matters. Great leaders, innovators, artists, thinkers, and doers come from everywhere and gosh! Some don't even have college degrees!]]>

That assumes there's something that could be done that isn't, someone who has answers that aren't being listened to. I don't see it. I saw a post at TPM by a petroleum engineer who said the only thing that s/he would have done differently is that “top kill” would have been the first move. The only difference I could imagine would be Carville defending the same actions he's screeching about now.]]>

Researchers have identified a rare form of autism that could potentially be treated with amino acid supplements Marriage between blood relatives – first cousins, in particular – is a common practice in the Middle East, and consequently there is a high rate of genetic disease in the region. Neurogeneticists at the University of California, San Diego, are mining genome data from Middle Eastern patients to identify diseases and the mutations associated with them. In collaboration with researchers from Egypt and Turkey, they have identified a form of autism which is caused by mutations in a single gene, and which could potentially be treated with nutritional supplements. Joseph Gleeson and his colleagues have been working with physicians throughout the Middle East for the past five years, enabling them to follow patients closely and get detailed life histories. They also use a technique called exome sequencing to analyse the patients’ DNA – this involves sequencing only the tiny…

no responsibility for ensuring accurate understanding between you and your sex partner, which is just like trying to get a consent form in the silly video you linked. I'm not okay with you getting out of responsibility.

Fourth, this notion that sexual frankness is a mood-killer is nonsense. If you sit with a sex partner and talk about things you'd like to do with each other and it kills the mood, yer doin it rong. Those of us who do BDSM cannot do what we do without explicit communication about likes and limits, and we still get off just fine.

Fifth, if we're assigning the burden of failed communication, I'd rather a misunderstanding result in folks not getting laid, not in women being sexually penetrated when they don't want to. Your view is, what, the reverse?

To get down to brass tacks, you're just wrong. I think just about everything you said is the same rehashed nonsense I've heard before.]]>
