I am an Industrial Engineer. Just graduated.

There are tons of IE jobs out there, but most require experience and it is a competitive field. It took me a while to find a job. However, I enjoy it very much. I loved studying IE and I was proud to have a degree in IE.

Petroleum engineers get paid much more, but it is even harder to find a job. You will have to go to BP or Chevron or a similar oil company to find work.

University Courses?????????????????

I am a petroleum engineer in Ecuador and I was wondering if I could go to a college in Texas and pay to take some courses in the English Language. I would like to add an American College to my resume and gain those credits. What do you think a good college would be??

Brad Perry answers:

I’m sure you could – like add another degree or just audit classes or get a masters degree? With auditing that probably varies from school to school and once you find a few you like I would e-mail their admissions office and tell them your situation and what you’d like to do. Texas has many great schools. The University of Texas in Austin, Southern Methodist University (Dallas), Texas A&M (Bryan/College Station), Texas Tech (Lubbock), The University of Houston, and Baylor University (Waco). Each is different and a few of these schools are private (SMU and Baylor). Texas is big though, so there are a lot of other schools to pick from as well.

Robert asks…

How good is Texas’ educational system?

I have heard that their system performs poorly and is ranked 43rd in national graduation rate (which is true).

http://centerforeducation.rice.edu/Research/dc/FactSheet.pdf

The issue no one seems to bring up is that Texas has a massive Hispanic population, greater than their non-Hispanic white population. Areas that have poorly performing schools generally have larger aggregations of blacks and Hispanics, few areas break this generalization.

I figured to thus ignore those two groups as they statistically weigh on performance metrics. Then, I figured to look at the highest performing group statistically, Asians (they also test substantially better than other groups). The national high school graduation rates for Asians is approximately 96%.

http://nces.ed.gov/pubs2011/2011012.pdf

Apparently, in Texas its only 83%. That 1300 basis point difference strikes me as being significant. I was not schooled in Texas but how is it and would Rick Perry be a good candidate (excoriating other variables) on merely an education front to grow America’s human capital (arguably the most important form of capital > than pecuniary capital).

Texas has approximately 26% of adults with college degrees, but there are a few factors to consider here. It is not clear how many of those people were Texas produced (which is more important). Human capital is extremely mobile and many people get degrees outside of their state and aggregate in state that has a better presence of their fields. Texas has a major oil industry attracting many petroleum/civil and other forms of engineers including businesses magnates. This leads to attracting wealth managers. Texas also more F500 firms than other states due to its no income tax policy which leads them to bringing in skilled employees. Texas also has a large military presence attracting including many programs that train specifically officers (which require degrees). Thus, I am not sure this is representative of Texas‘ educational system.

http://chronicle.com/article/Adults-With-College-Degrees-in/125995/

I’m curious as to where Texas or any other state for that matter would be if they were not able to attract talent from elsewhere.
Ziggy, you missed the point.

Texas due to its regulatory and tax policy attracts companies. Those companies attract skilled workers. Does not mean they were educated there.

What the heck, does it mean there are only “four real states”?

Brad Perry answers:

Horrible. They rewrote history textbooks to be more conservative. And they say we are the ones doing the brainwashing.

I would consider the University of Texas at Austin to be one of the best in the US. Another respected rival of UT is Texas A & M which has a petroleum engineering department as well. Stanford University in California is another well respected school with a graduate program in petroleum engineering. School of Mines in Colorado is highly respected in petroleum engineering and all other petroleum related disciplines. I would consider any one of these four to be among the best, and I’m in the industry.

And travels to the Gulf and work there for the US companies.
Brad Perry answers:

I’ll abbreviate Petroleum Engineer/Engineering as “PE” for sake of typing.

PEs will get paid (base) between $65,000 and $200,000, depending on many things. The low end is for new grads (not a lot of openings for them right now, so maybe even less money). The upper end is for those with special skills and a LOT of experience. If they work on off-shore rigs, they get extra pay (>10% more). Downsides are that PEs are in a highly volatile industry – they spend a lot of time unemployed, so they have to save the big bucks for when they have no income. Also, the government is doing everything it can to discourage production and expansion of the domestic industry, so it’s not growing. If you want to work in the Gulf area, contact the PE program at TAMU or U of Houston or UT-Austin, or maybe LSU. They can provide recent starting salaries and put a positive spin on things for you.

Good Universities for 30k$/year in US/Canada?

Well, I’m Egyptian and I was thinking of studying abroad. My parents said I could study abroad should the University I’m going to, as well as living expenses (dorms), books and general money come around to around 30,000$ a year. My interests are the engineering programs, more specifically Petroleum, Chemical, Civil and Computer Science, and pre-med. I’m not familiar with Universities within the US and Canada, so I really need help researching universities, but please, before posting names, be at least kind of sure that they meet the qualifications.
Brad Perry answers:

As a general rule, universities in Canada are less expensive than in the U.S. I would look into McGill University in Montreal or the University of Toronto, both are very good universities (competitive too, so it depends on your grades) and McGill could cost less than $30,000 a year even once you factor in living expenses, though that depends on how careful you are with money of course.

McGill University:

http://www.mcgill.ca/engineering/prospective/

http://www.mcgill.ca/undergraduate-admissions/tuition-fees-aid/international-tuition-fees (30 credits is a typical workload for 1 year full-time)

University of Toronto:

http://www.discover.engineering.utoronto.ca/Page4.aspx

http://www.discover.engineering.utoronto.ca/money-matters/fees.htm

You could also look into: Queen’s, U of Ottawa, Ryerson, McMaster, Concordia, Dalhousie, Carleton, York, Waterloo, U of Western Ontario, U of New Brunswick, U of Calgary, U of Alberta, UBC, U of Victoria, the BC Institute of Technology, Memorial, U of Saskatchewan, U of Regina, U of Manitoba… In no particular order, that about sums it up for Canadian engineering programs, the main ones anyway.

Google away and good luck

Brad Perry answers:

There are only 17 colleges with ABET-accredited petroleum engineering programs. You can look them up here: http://main.abet.org/aps/AccreditedProgramSearch.aspx/AccreditationSearch.aspx The best ones are probably Penn State and UT-Austin. Job prospects at UT will be better since most petroleum engineering jobs are in Texas, though it is growing in PA with the increased interest in natural gas.

Most colleges will accept transfer credits from community colleges, but engineering programs do not require 2 years of liberal arts classes, so at best it will save you 1 year of a 4 year program.

Yes, you need to start taking the required courses for that major. Engineering majors, like many others, cannot be completed in the last two years of college. You can and should start taking the courses for your major as soon as you arrive.
